Bitdefender Antivirus Review

It’s hard for an antivirus vendor to keep its clients happy.

Some of them want a light and speedy solution. Others want tons of features. All of them want effective protection.

It’s not easy to find a balance between everything the user might want.

Bitdefender might have found a way to do it, though.

In this Bitdefender review, I’ll make a point that many may not agree with: it is one of the most balanced antivirus products out there. That’s why we’ve included it in our best antivirus list both globally and for the UK.

It’s neither too expensive, nor too heavy or bare bones. Chances are if you’re looking for an antivirus product, you’ve already heard about the brand. It has about 10.2% market share, making it one of the top 5 antimalware vendors.

We’re going to take a look at Total Security: Bitdefender’s most popular home product. We’ll discuss what this program has in store, what technologies it uses, and so on. That’s how we’ll try to answer the question that made you read this article in the first place: is Bitdefender good?

Price

The pricing of all plans depends on the number of devices you wish to cover.

  • The Antivirus Plus plans start at $19.99 for one device and go up to $79.99 for 10 devices.
  • You can purchase the Internet Security plans for as low as $24.99 or as high as $89.99.
  • Total Security costs $39.98 for five devices and $44.99 for 10.
  • The Premium Security plan is for 10 devices only and costs $64.99/year.
  • In case you have around 15 devices, go for the Family Pack. It’s $49.99 for a year.
  • If you’re a business owner, you can make use of the Small Office Security pack. It covers up to 20 devices, with the cost going as high as $124.99/year

You can save money if you subscribe for two or three years.

Free Version

Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition is a good choice if you’re looking for a free cybersecurity solution. While it’s no match for Total Security, the Bitdefender free edition is armed with antivirus protection, antiphishing, antifraud, and harmful websites defense. Not to mention protection against web threats, including ransomware.

We all know there’s no such thing as free lunch. However, Bitdefender’s offer is one sweet piece of dessert free of charge!

And that’s not all. If you’d like to test Bitdefender, you can go for a free 30-day trial version before purchasing a license.

Requirements

To run this computer security software, you’ll need at minimum a device with Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, a dual-core 1.6 GHz processor, at least 2GB of RAM, and around 2.5 GB of free disk space.

Installation

The installation of Bitdefender starts by downloading a 472 MB file. Once the installation is complete (it took just over 2 minutes for me), you are prompted to create a My Bitdefender account. When you’re done with that, you are ready to use the software.

User Interface

bitdefender interface

Built with internet security in mind, Bitdefender’s UI is simple, yet providing easy access to all the features it’s loaded with. Most of the software’s functions are divided between Protection (threat prevention), and Privacy (data protection). Once you get the hang of it, you can find most of Bitdefender’s features with 2 or 3 clicks.

The Dashboard is where you get shortcuts to some recommended actions such as ransomware protection or the VPN.

You can also add custom actions. For example, you can add a quick action button to test the security of the Wi-Fi network you’re connected to.

For the purpose of this Bitdefender review, I tested different functions by adding them to the quick action button list. It’s kind of annoying you can only add a limited amount of buttons. Some users (like myself!) prefer having more options available in front of them. Oh, well.

The Protection tab shows off Bitdefender’s arsenal at its finest: from the antivirus features, through the online threat prevention, and right down to the ransomware protection.

From here you can also scan the software on your device for vulnerabilities, and toughen up Bitdefender’s firewall. All in one place, nice and slick.

The Privacy tab will let you filter all the data you share with the world. Bitdefender VPN, webcam access, file encryption, password managing, payment protection: it’s all tucked in here.

Features

Bitdefender is fairly rich in features. It has almost everything you need to keep the home network – and all devices connected to it – safe from online threats. But what exactly does Total Security have that makes it one of the most widely used cybersecurity solutions?

Scanning

Is Bitdefender’s scanning good? Well, I did some tests, and I’ll share the results later in this article.

Like any antivirus software, Bitdefender will let you perform a quick scan and a full system scan. Full scans last longer and might cause disruptions in system performance.

One cool tidbit is you can set up custom scans for certain folders or partitions. It helps you keep your machine clean without having to wait for a full scan of the whole hard drive. You can also scan files by simply right-clicking on them. Nice touch, Bitdefender Total Security!

Ransomware Protection

bitdefender ransomware protection

In recent years, ransomware has become one of the most damaging (and to hackers – profitable) cyber threats. It is a malicious code that encrypts your files and will only decrypt them back if you pay a certain amount of money (usually in cryptocurrencies).

Ransomware targets mainly organizations, but individuals can become victims too. Your files may end up encrypted, or your screen may flash a your-computer-is-locked warning from the FBI (it’s not really the FBI, hackers just want you to think that way).

What is Bitdefender doing to prevent such events from happening? It uses the Ransomware Remediation feature, which tries to identify ransomware attacks before they happen. Once a threat is detected, the software creates a backup of the targeted files. That data can later be restored when the attack is blocked.

In addition, Total Protection has the Safe Files feature. It protects the files in certain folders on your hard drive from being deleted or changed. You can choose which folders to protect.

VPN

This isn’t a Bitdefender VPN review, so this part will be short. Yes, Bitdefender has a built-in VPN service. Yes, it’s built on Hotspot Shield’s VPN technology.

But the free version that’s included in Total Security will only get you a daily allowance of 200 MB of free traffic. You won’t be able to choose the location of the server you are connecting to; the service will pick it out for you.

Antitheft

One thing I like about Bitdefender Total Security is its antitheft feature. While other security solutions may have a similar feature, Bitdefender’s antitheft function is easy to operate, making it more user-friendly.

One particular feature relates to the unfortunate event where your device might get lost or stolen. In such a case, you can lock it remotely with a PIN code from the Bitdefender Central dashboard. That way no one would be able to access the data on the hard drive. And if someone does try to access the device, you will receive webcam snapshots of their faces.

From the Bitdefender Central, you can also see the approximate location of the device, and you have the option to wipe out all the data on it. It’s an excellent opportunity to protect your sensitive information.

All in all, it’s no wonder Bitdefender is considered one of the best internet security solutions out there.

Data Protection & Encryption

Encryption is a crucial precautionary measure, and you should use it every time you get the chance. As with any good antivirus software, Bitdefender will let you encrypt folders with sensitive data.

Unfortunately, it won’t let you encrypt the entire hard drive. You can only go as far as encrypting partitions. You can, however, purchase the GravityZone Full Disk Encryption from the same company for that exact purpose.

The File Shredder does the job when you need to permanently destroy files and folders. It’s a feature every cybersecurity solution should have. Otherwise, you run the risk of exposing your sensitive data to whoever gets physical access to your device.

Payments Protection

Safepay is a secured browser for online banking and ecommerce. The best internet security solutions all have a secured browser by default, as banking malware and fraudulent websites abound. It aims to isolate your transactions from any potential threats, such as phishing, keylogging, MITM attacks, etc.

Safepay automatically opens all banking websites in a secured browser.

Safepay comes with a virtual keyboard to protect you from keylogging. This feature also blocks any attempts to take snapshots of your screen. Its built-in hotspot protection will guard your transactions in case you’re using an unsecured public Wi-Fi. Public Wi-Fi is never safe, but if you really have to use one – Bitdefender can minimize the risk.

Scanning for Viruses

bitdefender protection features

Bitdefender brags about its Photon scanning technology which adjusts to the user’s behavior and makes scans run faster as time passes by. Photon is cloud-based, so you’ll need an internet connection to take advantage of it.

A full scan with Bitdefender took under 51 minutes to complete. That’s not unheard of for security software, but it certainly is impressive. The program was quietly running in the background, not causing any visible slowdowns. I kept using the laptop as usual and saw no impact on performance.

A quick scan lasted less than 2 minutes. You can schedule quick and full scans on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, as well as on system startup. There isn’t, however, an option to schedule a scan on a particular date.

Real-Time Protection

OK, it’s time to separate the men from the boys. Let’s see how Bitdefender is doing in terms of threat detection.

Phishing protection: 10/10

Bitdefender scored a perfect 10 when tested against valid phishing webpages. It recognized and blocked all the phishing sites available online at the time of writing.

91% of cyber attacks are launched with a phishing email. Therefore, having good protection against it is crucial. A good internet security software should be able to provide it.

Parental Control: 8/10

bitdefender parental controls

Unfortunately, the parental control isn’t perfect in Bitdefender. It didn’t prevent a site with graphic videos from loading. It also let me visit a page about MMA. While this is a sport, it is a violent one. Parental control filters of competitive products block such websites from loading. One such example is Kaspersky Total Security.

But this is a Bitdefender review, so let’s move on.

In order to use Parental control, you’ll have to set up a profile for your child at Bitdefender Central. Once you’re done with that, you can collect all kinds of information about your child’s activity: location, websites visited, apps opened, social media activity, phone number contacts, time spent on the device, and others.

Even if it has some flaws, it’s safe to say Bitdefender Total Security has done a decent job in creating a full-range parental control filter.

Downloading the Eicar Test File

Testing Bitdefender with the EICAR Antimalware Testfile showed no disturbing signs. The software instantly detected the threat. A popup informed me about the detection, while a more detailed explanation was waiting for me in the Notifications menu.

Independent Lab Test

In their October 2020 report, independent antivirus lab AV-Test assigned a 6/6 score to Bitdefender Internet Security, Total Security’s little brother. They are pretty much identical in terms of features, but Internet Security doesn’t have antitheft protection and OneClick Optimizer.

Bitdefender scored a 100% success rate in AV Test’s checkup for detecting zero-day malware threats. It also slammed an excellent 100% in fighting widespread malware samples.

Customer Support

Customer care is timely and polite. You can choose between email, chat, and phone support, as with all the best computer security solutions.

An email query took approximately two hours to get a response. It was followed by another query which got an answer within the hour.

I also tried the chat support. Within 5 minutes I had two questions answered. While it isn’t anything mind-blowing, it certainly shows effort in terms of customer care.

Bitdefender Review – Verdict

Bitdefender is a force to be reckoned with. It strikes a great balance between what the average home user looks for, and what they really should have in order to stay protected. (Those can be surprisingly different things.)

It’s easy to use, it has powerful malware-fighting technology behind it, it’s loaded with all kinds of features, and it works on all the popular OSs.

Which doesn’t mean it’s perfect. But then again, no antivirus software is. I hope this Bitdefender review comes in handy and helps you choose the solution that best fits your needs.

Don’t be a victim of phishers. Protect yourself with this antivirus.

Webcam Filter

The 2020 edition of Bitdefender total security comes with useful features such as a webcam filter and others discussed in this review of Bitdefender.  Who would have thought that webcam can be exploited by hackers to interfere with your security?

Webcam in your security system, laptops and phones can be used by malicious people to spy on you. Without a good antivirus, spyware can be used to activate your webcam remotely.

It uses the latest technology to prevent crucial apps, files and documents being held hostage without slowing down your machines.

Protect your Files against Ransomware

According to cybersecurity experts, ransomware is a malicious file that has one agenda; to extort money from its victims so it can release the files that it has held hostage. Like other malware, it usually infects machines by tricking someone to install it.

It can be sent by email, visiting a phishing site or downloading it through an unsafe site. It usually targets hospital, high profile individuals, and schools and now it has found its way into home computers.

Bitdefender antivirus free edition or premium will protect your computer against these malware by allowing you to choose the apps that can make changes to your sensitive files and the ones that cannot.

It will also flag apps that try to change your files.

Anti-Tracking Feature

In many Bitdefender reviews, this online security company is always highly rated mostly for its malware detection and its anti-tracking feature.

The internet knows your every move. Every company wants your data and since they know you will never willingly hand over what they want, they use trackers to keep monitoring your every move.

Trackers are almost in every free service that you use. They can be in email service, search engines, social media, just to name a few.

Trackers detected can be grouped in these categories:

 Advertising

Most companies monitor what you are searching for online. If you recently searched or discussed how you want a new blender, you will see ads for blenders everywhere.

Social Media

There are trackers that monitor user engagement, products and pages shared on different social media sites.

Essential

It tracks important webpage functionalities.

Most of these trackers slow down the performance of your machine plus decrease your privacy online. Hide your online activity with an Anti-tracker extension from Bitdefender.  The extension is available for all browsers such as internet explorer, Chrome, Safari and Firefox.

Bitdefender VPN

Should you use Bitdefender VPN or look somewhere else? This is a VPN I would recommend to anyone looking for privacy, reliability and speed. It’s ultra-fast and will safeguard your online activities from malicious people.

I also really like the idea of having an antivirus and VPN all in 1 platform. I have been using its premium package and the speed of my machine never dropped.

Bitdefender VPN is one of the best VPN choices for anyone that wants a simple setup that does the basics of keeping you anonymous online. But for features beyond that this might not be the ideal VPN to pick. Keep reading to get our full Bitdefender VPN review.

One minute Bitdefender VPN review

Bitdefender VPN combines simplicity with speed. The first part of that is a positive for beginners that want a VPN that just works with minimal effort on their part. For more advanced and demanding folk, this might be found lacking. The second part of that two-part appeal, speed, comes as this VPN is actually powered by the already well established Hotspot Shield VPN, which is a good thing - check out the Hotspot Shield VPN review to see why.

Connection speeds are above average and there are plenty of servers dotted about the globe. These are effective at getting around some geo restrictions and accessing US Netflix and BBC iPlayer, for example. But they failed to unblock the likes of Disney Plus or Amazon Prime Video.

For all other issues, there is a decent support service with live chat available. There are lots of apps for the big name operating systems with Mac, Windows, iOS and Android all covered. Plus you get 10 simultaneous connections at once so you can take advantage of all those offerings.

The stats:

  • Servers: 1,300+
  • Locations: 30 countries
  • Devices: 10 simultaneous connections
  • Platforms: Windows, Mac, Android, iOS
  • Protocols: Catapult Hydra
  • Top features: Unblocks Netflix, fast, Catapult Hydra

Bitdefender VPN review: How much does Bitdefender VPN cost? Is there a free trial?

Bitdefender VPN keeps pricing very simple, with two options to pick from: annual or monthly. Go for the longer term investment, with the year paid up front, and you stand to make a saving of up to 40%. While you have more freedom to end when you like using the monthly option, it's so affordable to go for the year it makes sense, especially when you take the 30-day money-back guarantee into account – but more on that below.

Compared to the competition, at the more affordable end you've got Surfshark at $2.49 a month for its two-year plan. Then there's CyberGhost for $2.25 a month when you commit to three years.

Of course if you're already going to use, or use the Bitdefender security software, then you may find it a better deal to get the VPN as part of one of those packages on offer.

If all that sounds too much like commitment, you can make the most of their 30-day money back guarantee. You will need to give over your account details but won't be charged. Then, if you pay for a month, or year, and decide within 30 days this isn't for you, all your money will be given back.

This is a good option as one of the best cheap VPN choices. Though if you want to get more for less check out the best free VPN choices instead.

Does Bitdefender VPN work on Netflix? What other streaming services can it unblock?

Bitdefender VPN is a good option if you want to unblock Netflix. This can be a tricky service when it comes to geo restrictions, with many VPN services failing to unblock. Bitdefender had no issues accessing Netflix US and offers decent speeds while streaming too.

Another tough streaming service to get access to via a VPN is BBC iPlayer, but once again Bitdefender made short work of getting you up and running.

Where the service fell down in terms of streaming was with Disney Plus, which it wasn't able to access. The same happened when trying to get into Amazon Prime Video where the VPN was detected and access was denied.

This doesn't quite fit in among the best streaming VPN services. However, for managing to crack those two tough nuts of Netflix US and BBC iPlayer, it may still be the ideal VPN for you unless you wish to watch Disney Plus and Prime Video.

It's worth making use of your 30 days to see what you can get access to from where you are with your local servers. We recommend checking out the speeds as well as accessibility to see if this performs well enough to suit your needs.

Bitdefender VPN review: What features can you expect and how do they boost security?

Bitdefender VPN is not a feature rich service but that isn't to say it doesn't offer a lot. You have apps for iOS, Android, Mac and Windows all of which offer features. On the Windows app, for example, you can search by country to find the ideal server location for what you need – perfect when streaming abroad.

A kill switch is a useful feature here which works well, cutting off internet access when the connection drops – something review of bitdefender can save you from being attacked.

There is a lack of split tunnelling. This would allow you to access multiple locations for various apps – ideal if you want to keep your online browsing local but your streaming apps set to another location, for example.

A feature we like was the auto connection when a P2P app is launched. This means if you have a torrent client setup, the VPN will fire up as this is opened to make sure you remain anonymous while using the service.

Dark Mode is another feature worth mentioning as it will allow you to run the client with a blackout background that's ideal for night time use. It's also a nice addition if you're running dark mode on your machine and want your apps to fit in the same.

The privacy policy of Hotspot Shield, which this runs via, is clear in saying that there is no monitoring of your web traffic or browsing history. The downside comes from session logging, with more done than on most other services. That means things like recording device identifiers, browser types, device settings and network information. It doesn't mean they know what you're doing online, or who you are, but it's more information than some will feel comfortable giving up.

Bitdefender VPN review of speed and overall performance

To test the speed and performance of Bitdefender VPN we used US locations on a 1Gbps connection. Testing was done by measuring the download speeds using Ookla's SpeedTest and Netflix's Fast.com. Each one is done across morning and evening times.

Based in US

Catapult Hydra: 340-410Mbps

Bitdefender VPN uses the bespoke Hydra Protocol from Hotspot Shield which means it's all about speed balanced with security. The top speed hit was 410Mbps which is impressive. It doesn't hit the top end, from ExpressVPN's Lightway protocol which managed 610Mbps in our tests, but it's still a lot faster than many.

The key here is that our testing of Hotspot Shield found similar speeds. That means you're Bitdefender Total Security 2022 Crack + Activation Code Lifetime {Latest} getting a limited version of the service just because it's running through Bitdefender.

Client set-up and available support from Bitdefender VPN

Bitdefender VPN, as mentioned, comes with apps for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. These are decent, if not the most feature rich, and all work as you'd hope. What's not so helpful is a lack of support for other services and the inability to install on a router, for example.

A router install can be helpful as a way to get lots of devices running behind the VPN connection at the same time. However, since this service does offer an impressive 10 simultaneous device connections at once, the need for a router client may not be so great in this case.

Setup of the clients is super simple, as is the use of them after that time. This service is all about keeping things minimal so it's as easy as possible to use even for those new to the service.

Should you run into any issues, setting up or getting access to services when online, there is a helpful support service. The online live chat is decent with a quick response time and fairly well-clued up people on the other end. Failing that, or if you're in less of a rush, there is an email response service which works well too. Keep in mind the VPN is just part of the Bitdefender service, so any support you get is from people trained on the wider security system. This means they may not be as helpful as someone working for a dedicated VPN service.

Bitdefender VPN review: Our final verdict

Bitdefender VPN is a fast VPN service that does a good job of offering smart torrenting support, unblocking of Netflix and BBC iPlayer as well as decent live chat support, a selection of easy to use apps and a pretty good privacy policy.

For those that want tighter security, more features and access to Disney Plus or Amazon Prime Video you may find something better suited to you in our best VPN guide.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The 2021 Tom's Guide Awards have been announced, and Bitdefender Total Security has been awarded as Highly Recommended antivirus software. Head to the Tom's Guide Awards 2021 Best Products for Working From Home page to see all the winners and recommended runners-up.

Bitdefender's antivirus protections are just a hair behind those of industry leaders Kaspersky and Norton among the best antivirus software, but its programs pack in more useful features at lower prices.

We recommend the entry-level Bitdefender Antivirus Plus for any Windows 10 user who doesn't need parental controls. It's one of the best Windows 10 antivirus programs, hands-down.

Bitdefender has made only modest adjustments to its lineup for 2021. There is still the same five-product range, from the bare-bonesBitdefender Antivirus Free Edition (one of our top picks for best free antivirus) through Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, Bitdefender Internet Security and Bitdefender Total Security to the flagship Bitdefender Premium Security with its unlimited VPN use.  All five use the same malware-detection technology.

The biggest change for 2021 is that Bitdefender now seems to take longer to fully scan a system. Still, the programs deliver excellent malware protection and are the rare antivirus programs that can be purchased in a bundle with home networking hardware. Read on for the rest of our Bitdefender 2021 review.

Bitdefender 2021: Costs and what's covered

The lowest rung of Bitdefender's line is Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition, which provides basic protections in a no-frills but effective package.

Today's best Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition deals

The cheapest paid program, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, offers a lot for its price. It includes Bitdefender's Network Threat scanner, a file shredder, an unlimited password manager, the company's Safepay hardened browser and an anti-tracking feature. Yearly subscriptions range from $40 for one PC to $80 for 10 PCs, although steep discounts are frequently available.

The next step up, Bitdefender Internet Security, is again only for Windows machines; yearly costs range from $60 for one PC to $90 for 10. It adds a two-way firewall, parental controls and dedicated webcam and microphone protection. The file-encryption feature has been dropped for 2021.

Today's best Bitdefender Internet Security deals

Bitdefender Total Security adds software for Macs and Android devices, plus a new system optimizer to squeeze a little extra performance out of your system. It covers  five devices for $90 a year or 10 systems for $100, and it's one of our top picks among the best internet security suites. The Bitdefender Family Pack is Total Security for up to 15 systems, with a list price of $120.

The Mac antivirus software is also available as the stand-aloneBitdefender Antivirus for Mac starting at $40 per year. There are two Android antivirus apps, the stripped-down Bitdefender Antivirus Free and the $15-per-year feature-richBitdefender Mobile Security. Bitdefender Mobile Security for iOS also costs $15 per year, but Apple won't let it do much.

Except for the free option, all these programs give you 200MB of data daily on Bitdefender's VPN service. Unlimited data costs an additional $7 a month review of bitdefender $40 a year, or you can get Bitdefender's Premium Security antivirus suite. That package costs $150 a year for 10 systems and comes with priority support.

There are also two ways to get Bitdefender antivirus protection with home networking hardware.

Netgear's newer routers, including the Orbi mesh systems and the Nighthawk line, have optional protection called Netgear Armor that protects smart-home devices and also includes an unlimited-device license for Bitdefender Total Security.

Some new Netgear routers come with one to three free years of Armor protection. After that, it's $70 a year. You can also add it to routers that have already been purchased.

That's quite a bargain considering you're getting the same coverage as the $120 Bitdefender Family Pack. (Netgear has a full list of routers that support Netgear Armor here.)

You can also get Bitdefender Total Security for unlimited devices with the Bitdefender Box network-security appliance, which retails for $200. Like Netgear Armor, the Box protects smart-home devices. Subscription is free for the first year and costs $99 a year after that.

Bitdefender's Windows antivirus software works with Windows 7 (with Service Pack 1), Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10. The Mac software requires macOS 10.10 Yosemite or later. Mobile devices require a minimum of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or iOS 11.2. Like most antivirus makers, Bitdefender doesn't offer a consumer Linux program.

Bitdefender 2021: Antivirus protection

Whenever Bitdefender's malware-scanning engine encounters what may be a new piece of malware, it uploads the suspicious item to Bitdefender's online testing lab for analysis. New malware signatures are distributed several times daily to the 500 million systems protected by Bitdefender products.

These uploads will include some information about your system and what it was doing when a new threat was detected. If you'd rather Bitdefender not know that, you can opt out of this data collection. (You'll still get the malware-signature updates.)

Bitdefender blocks potentially unwanted applications (PUAs), fileless malware and bootkits. It also guards the integrity of files and automatically copies files under attack from encrypting ransomware so that you have backup copies.

The Profiles feature monitors what you're doing and tailors the protection accordingly. There are preset profiles for work, movie, games and public Wi-Fi.

Bitdefender no longer offers the free downloadable Bitdefender Rescue CD, which booted a severely infected system into Linux for a complete scan and cleaning. Bitdefender paid software still creates the similar Bitdefender Rescue Environment in a hidden hard-drive partition during installation, but the Rescue Partition now uses a sandboxed version of Windows 10 instead of Linux to remove persistent threats.

Bitdefender 2021: Antivirus performance

Sophos100% 100%98.3% 86%
Trend Micro 100% 100%100% 92%

In November-December 2020 testing by the Germany-based AV-Test lab, Bitdefender's malware-scanning engine detected 100% of both brand-new "zero-day" malware and known "widespread" malware.

But it picked up 12 false positives, a rather high number and by far the most of all seven brands of paid antivirus software we review. Those other brands — ESET, Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton, Sophos and Trend Micro — also all got 100% scores across the board.

Bitdefender has done very well in most of AV-Test's 30 monthly evaluations since January 2017, failing to detect 100% of zero-day malware only three times and failing to detect 100% of widespread malware only once with a 99.9% score.

In tests conducted by the AV-Comparatives lab in Austria, Bitdefender's defenses let a few threats through. It caught 99.6% of the "real-world" online threats in cumulative tests from July through October 2020. Trend Micro had a perfect 100% score, and Kaspersky 99.7%.

Bitdefender had four false positives over the entire period and Kaspersky had two, but Trend Micro had an astounding 63 false positives. Its malware scanner may be a little too sensitive.

We also use results from London-based SE Labs, in which Kaspersky usually comes out on top, but Bitdefender is no longer tested by that lab.

Bitdefender 2021: Security and privacy features

Each Bitdefender paid program blocks web-tracking in the Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome browsers, but not in Edge.

There's also a powerful file shredder that's quick and easy to use. Bitdefender's File Vault encryption feature has been discontinued, but files encrypted with older versions of Bitdefender programscan still be retrieved if you remember the password.

Bitdefender's password manager works with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Bitdefender's own Safepay hardened browser, but not Edge or Apple's Safari.

Safepay protects online banking and shopping sessions by blocking browser extensions and making sure you're using a secure HTTPS session. It has an on-screen keyboard so you can type in passwords and credit-card numbers without having to worry about keyloggers.

Bitdefender Internet Security, Total Security and Premium Security still have one of the industry's easiest and best webcam- protection features, which not only blocks access but lets you choose which applications have webcam access.

They also include a two-way firewall, which can be set to Stealth mode to make sure nobody from outside your home network gets access.

Parental Controls come with Internet Security, Total Security and Premium Security and work across all platforms for seamless control and monitoring.

Bitdefender Total Security had a moderate impact on system performance.

Image 1 of 2
Image 2 of 2

To measure the performance impact, we used our custom benchmark test, which clocks how long a PC takes to match 20,000 names and addresses on an Excel spreadsheet. The Lenovo ThinkPad T470 laptop we used had a 2.5GHz Core i5-7200U processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of solid-state storage with 61.2GB of files.

Before we installed Bitdefender, the T470 took an average of 10.4 seconds to complete the benchmark, a result we used as a baseline. The completion time increased autodesk maya 2018 keygen download - Crack Key For U 12.4 seconds after Total Security was loaded but before any active scanning took place, indicating a a rather heavy 19% decline in performance.

By comparison, Kaspersky Total Security's post-installation performance decline was only 12%, and other brands had even less.

During a full scan of the entire computer, it took our benchmark test 13.8 seconds to finish — an 11% percent decline in performance compared to the post-installation score, and a 33% decline from the pre-installation baseline.

The benchmark completion time during a quick scan was 13.6 seconds, indicating a 10% performance drop from the post-installation score and a 31% drop from the baseline.

Kaspersky Total Security and ESET Smart Security Premium both had lighter impacts overall. But the other brands we tested had heavier tolls, with McAfee nearly doubling the system load during full scans.

The Bitdefender scanning engine took 35 minutes and 41 seconds to complete the first full scan, looking at a comprehensive 1,208,083 files. That's more than twice as long as the 2020 edition's time of 15:01 to do roughly the same task. But the second time through the system, Bitdefender's engine learned what to ignore and examined 826,635 files in 8:38.

By contrast, Kaspersky Total Security 2021 took 17:34 to scan through 400,571 files on the first pass — one-third as many as Bitdefender Total Security. Subsequent Kaspersky passes were lightning-fast at 1:26, faster than Bitdefender Total Security's Quick Scan.

Speaking of Bitdefender Total Security's Quick Scan, it took 3 minutes and 58 seconds to run through 9,121 key files that might be infected. That time dropped to 3:35 on subsequent scans. The older version took 1:58 to look at 9,117 files.

While Kaspersky Total Security ran through one-third as many files, it took 1:26 to check for malware that dropped to 1:12 on the second pass.

Bitdefender 2021: Interface

Bitdefender's desktop interface has been slightly updated and tightened up. The Dashboard shows the program's major categories on the left, including Protection, Privacy, Utilities, Notifications and Settings.

On the right, you can start a scan and also fire up the VPN or open the Safepay hardened browser. You can add another "action" of your choosing review of bitdefender replace an existing one.

Bitdefender's Taskbar icon lets you open the main program or update its malware definitions, but it can't start a scan.

You can check your subscription, get tech support and use the Parental Advisor feature on your Bitdefender Central online account, which has atwo-factor-authentication option.

Bitdefender now offers Digital Identity Protection, which checks your online personal data exposure and alerts you to threats, data breaches and identity theft. It costs $60 a year for up to three phones and five computers.

Bitdefender 2021: Installation and support

Loading Bitdefender on a fresh system starts with creating an account at Bitdefender Central, then downloading the nearly-500MB installer file.

As the program installs itself, it runs a quick device assessment and lets you run a Quick Scan. It took us 13 minutes to get and install Bitdefender Total Security 2021, roughly twice as long as the previous version took.

Bitdefender's paid programs include full 24/7 tech support, and you can call, email or use the company's chat window. With Bitdefender's Premium Security suite, you get priority support. (We've heard several complaints about Bitdefender tech support over the years.)  The Bitdefender website has a slew of FAQs, self-service material and instructional videos.

Bitdefender 2021 review: Bottom line

Bitdefender's 2021 Windows antivirus lineup returns to the top tier of security programs with excellent defenses that comes close to air-tight protection. Bitdefender's scanning engine let a few threats through and took up a moderate amount of system resources, but it remains one of the best antivirus software  options available and the near-equal of Kaspersky's and Norton's products.

For consumers who need more than just antivirus software, Norton 360 with LifeLock also delivers identity-theft protection and unlimited VPN use, but your wallet may feel the hit. Kaspersky Total Security remains our top choice for pure antivirus software – but that's only if you need everything it offers.

If you're looking for a bargain, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus is a good balance between cost and features, starting at $40 for a single PC. By the same token, Bitdefender Total Security is a good buy considering all it includes, and you can get it for even less with Bitdefender's Box security appliance or Netgear Armor router protection.

Summary

Our research shows that Bitdefender Total Security is the perfect option for users who want every single security component and feature in a single and well-integrated security package in addition to all the bonus features.

It comes as no surprise that this year as well, Bitdefender Total Security comes out as the mega-suite every security conscious online consumer needs

Bitdefender Total Security full review

There are a lot of security companies on the internet that provides users with a basic and barebones security suite.

Apart from that, they add a much higher level and more expensive security suite by using a total of two methods.

Some companies use the method of creating a security mega-suite with the addition of advanced features for computers using the Windows operating system such as system performance optimizations tools and online backups.

Then there are those security companies that try to do the same by offering cross-platform capabilities by adding full support for platforms such as iOS, Android and macOS.

Our research shows that as far as BitDefender Total Security is concerned, it goes a bit of both ways.

Allow us to explain.

When on the Windows platform, Bitdefender Total Security offers users anti-theft and system optimization tools.

It also enables users to install full-blown and comprehensive protection for the user’s Android and macOS devices.

However, it keeps its support on the iOS limited.

Regardless, our conclusion is simple and clear.

Bitdefender Total Security is the best online security mega-suite that money can buy and works equally well on any given platform.

Price

Bitdefender charges users around $89.99 each year for its services.

Users have the option of adding its protection on a total of five devices.

However, users who want to review of bitdefender Bitdefender Total Security on a broader basis can raise their limit of simultaneous devices to a total of 10 by raising the base price to just $99.99 per year.

Comparing that with other security suites such as Kaspersky Total Security and we find that Kaspersky charges the same amount of money but only offers users a total of five licenses.

There is also Norton Security Premium that charges users $109.99 per year but allows users to connect up to 10 devices in addition to 25GB of online backup hosting service.

Needless to say, the pricing model that Bitdefender makes use of neatly sits in the exact middle of the industry average.

On a side note, we would

Perhaps this is a good time to mention that users who have this need of scriptcase download - Activators Patch a ton of internet-enabled devices, the best option for them is to sign up for McAfee Total Protection which costs users around $99.99 each year and protects an unlimited number of devices on the iOS, Android, mac OS, and Windows platform.

As should be the case with a security product that doesn’t have any limitations in terms of supporting platforms, users can activate their Bitdefender subscription by simply entering a code via an online console available in the official Bitdefender Central area.

Once the Bitdefender security product makes an appearance in the user’s console, the user has all the opportunity in the world to install the product’s protection on any system that he/she is using.

If that doesn’t sound cool enough then users can also send an email that has an official link to the installation procedure on some or all of his/her other devices.

Once the user clicks on the installation link which is in the sent email, the link would automatically download the relevant Bitdefender installer file which is suitable for the operating system that is active.

Windows has shared features

Selection_019

As far as the looks of the product is concerned, it looks pretty much the same to the official Bitdefender Internet Security on the Windows platform.

Apart from the application’s window title, the only significant difference is that Bitdefender Total Security offers users a total of four useful utilities via its Utilities page.

In Bitdefender Internet Security, users see an invitation to purchase an upgrade instead of the options themselves.

Moreover, the official Bitdefender installer also takes liberties to add the company’s VPN review of bitdefender the overall installation process.

For those who don’t know, Bitdefender has a VPN service that is indirectly powered by Hotspot Shield Elite by AnchorFree.

With that said, the VPN does come with a 200 MB daily bandwidth limit.

In order to get rid of the limit, the user has to a separate subscription package for Bitdefender VPN.

Readers who want to know more about that should read the review that we wrote for Bitdefender Internet Security.

Does Bitdefender work better on Windows?

Bitdefender does have more optimizations for the Windows platform.

If the user has installed the Windows version of Bitdefender Total Security then he/she should go to the Utilities page in order to find a total of three different optimization tools.

These optimization tools come in the form of Startup Optimizer, OneClick optimizer and of course, Disk Cleanup.

In other to get things slightly rolling, the user should click the option Optimize My Device which comes under the option for OneClick Optimizer.

Selection_011

Our research shows that if the user has a decent system then the scan would complete its duties fairly quickly and may also find hundreds of items that the user should then get rid of.

The scan usually categorizes the found item in Private Cleanup, Registry Cleanup, and Disk Cleanup.

We have already mentioned the fact that the recommended action here is to simply click on the view details button which is present right next to each given category.

Some of the disk issues that the user might run could include temporary files along with junk, debug and cache files which may occupy as much as 2 to 3 GB on the user’s hard drive.

Our research shows that if the user takes a detailed look into the Registry issues category, then he/she would find that this is the place where Bitdefender reports erroneous and/or useless entries of various different types which include shared DLLs and software locations.

If we turn our attention to the Privacy issues category then there is where Bitdefender takes care of problems related to web browser history, cookies and cache.

In order to get rid of all the problems that we have mentioned above, all that the user has to do is to click on the button that says Optimize in order to enable Bitdefender to wipe away each and every issue.

Once the Bitdefender Total Security has completed the process, it offers users a detailed report.

The report comes in the form of a lengthy and clear HTML document that lists each and every Registry and file change.

A lot of other security suites offer users similar components which enable users to preview all the changes while also exempting specific ones.

Some security suites reverse a few, some or all of the recently-made changes afterward.

The majority of online users would understandably have little to no idea about what to look for in the list of items that may contain hundreds of entries.

That is the reason why Bitdefender does not even bother with that and does not provide users either with the undo function and/or the preview function.

Bitdefender Total Security online utilities

Selection_020

Many online consumers do not realize this but over a period of time, their computer machines can become quite heavy and cluttered with several dozens of different products that come from developers who clearly think their services are important enough for the user to actually launch at the machine’s startup and also always run as a part of the operating system’s background processes.

In the majority of the cases, we have come to find that launching programs and/or services as they are needed is more or less sufficient.

Readers should understand that it takes more time on part of the machine to load any and all programs.

This is where Bitdefender Total Security offers users the option of Startup Optimizer.

What does it do?

It assists users in clearing the clutter that usually exists in great amounts as background processes.

Other security suites such as those of Panda Protection and Quick Heal offer users some basic management of their startup applications, services, and programs.

However, our research shows that Bitdefender really takes that process and kicks it to the next higher level.

More specifically though, Bitdefender Total Security shows the user just how much each of the startup programs is slowing down the user’s start up experience.

If the user does go ahead and clicks the Optimize Device Boot option for the very first time, Bitdefender Total Security takes it upon itself to warn the user that he/she would have to reboot so that the service can accurately measure how fast the user’s machine’s apps launch.

Once the user has successfully performed a reboot, Bitdefender Total Security displays the amount of time the machine’s boot process took and what percentage of that total time actually involved the machine trying to load all the startup apps.

Our research shows that if the user is not working on a virtual machine, and is not a heavy user, then the adjusted startup apps lists may just reduce the boot time of 2 minutes by 1 second.

Now, we can assure users that their mileage may vary.

It has to.

Otherwise, what is the point?

The good thing about Bitdefender Total Security in this regard is that users can reversibly enable/disable any given startup application or program.

More specifically, this means that the user would probably have to launch the startup program manually on his/her own if he/she really wants it.

For those situations where the user finds that the startup programs, services and/or apps are truly slowing down the machine’s progress, the user can simply set some or a lot of them to start loading after a slight delay.

Bitdefender provides this feature to users with the aim of dining out the percentage of Bitdefender Total Security users who select Disable, Delay and/or Enable option for each given app.

Users who are unable to see the related community data shortly after clicking on the option should give it some time before it finally appears.

Some other security suites such as Bull Guard Premium Protection also provide users with similar functioning features.

Bull Guard also provides users with a full and complete timeline of all the processes that the user’s machine has to load up at start up time.

Symantec Norton Security has a startup manager which is able to report resource prevalence and usage among various other things to Norton users.

Our research shows that when the official Bitdefender Total Security Optimizer component searched for useless and meaningless files which were eating up space, the suite’s other tool known as Disk Cleanup sought very large folders and files on the user’s machine.

Bitdefender Total Security essentially leaves the user to make the decision whether or not the user needs its features.

The official Bitdefender Total Security, more or less, produces reports which include some files which are essential to the operation of the Windows operating system.

We’re talking about files such as pagefile.sys.

However, it also warns the user that he/she does not review of bitdefender the permission to delete such files.

Our research shows that the previous version of Bitdefender Total Security displayed all the results by making use of a pie chart.

Or more specifically, a double-ringed colorful pie chart.

However, the latest edition does not do that.

Instead, it offers users a much more practical and simpler view.

Moreover, the latest version does a good job of bucketing all found items into a total of four size-ranges.

These size ranges come in the form of 10 MB to 500 MB, 500 MB to 1 GB, 1 GB to 5GB, and more than 5 GB.

Again, our research tells us that it would become very hard for users to decide which given file should they consider as unnecessary and hence delete.

This situation is tough.

Selection_012

However, users should probably make the decision of ignoring any and all files that are not present in a document that is familiar to them.

This also holds true for files that aren’t in a popular movie, and/or image formats.

As it turns out, users can make life a lot easier for themselves when it comes to identifying files if they just sort out all the results via file type.

Users who are not confident or sure about a given found file/folder/item, they can easily perform a click on the present search icon in order to examine the item.

To take an example, users may find that after they have run a Bitdefender scan on their system, the security suite turns up a file that is 12 GB in size and goes by the name of HiTree.mp4.

In such a case, the user should do a little bit of scrutiny.

Our research shows that the user is likely to find that indeed the file referred to some movie or something the user was already familiar with.

It is also possible that the Bitdefender may just show a part of a file which contains a collection of big files.

Whether or not the result is useful, it sure is a nice way to carry out some tests in order to gauge the security suite’s performances.

Moving forward, once the user makes the decision of selecting files that he/she finds no use for and confirms the process of deletion, Bitdefender Total Security wipes all those files from the machine’s disk.

In the process of doing so, it also bypasses the system’s Recycle Bin function.

What about the anti-theft feature for the Windows platform

Now, having some anti-theft features on a hulking desktop computer machine is not really relevant.

Why?

Because most of the time, the desktop machine resides in the user’s home or maybe in the office that is locked.

This is where things like theft are not really a worry.

On the other hand, there are modern laptops which offer so much power and potential to users that a lot of companies and individuals eschew the older and bulkier desktop machines altogether.

Is that not convenient or what?

Well, as it turns out, there is indeed a problem with having a powerful computer and also having the ability to take it wherever one wants to.

That problem is convenience.

More specifically, convenience for a thief.

Selection_013

Readers should understand that from the point of view of a given thief, stealing such a laptop is very convenient.

And in the process of stealing the device, the thief is also taking away the user’s primary machine.

If the user has a Windows laptop, then he/she does not need to do anything out of the ordinary to active anti-theft features.

If the user clicks on the Explorer Anti-Theft option, it simply takes him/her to the official Bitdefender Central area.

This area offers users some buttons via which users can take advantage of various Anti-theft features.

More specifically, this page allows the user to wipe, lock and/or locate the device in question.

There is also an option to activate a loud sound alarm but that is only available on the Android platform.

Whenever the user’s device forms a connection to the internet via a WiFi network, it basically gets the device’s accurate location by making use of the WiFi triangulation feature.

Our research shows that this method of ascertaining the device’s location is quite accurate.

With that said, when the device has connected to the internet via an Ethernet connection, the software takes the route of falling back on the IP address’ geolocation.

This gives much coarser accuracy.

Our research shows that if the user is lucky enough, the software would point out the right city.

However, we must warn the user that sometimes the software could locate the user’s laptop as much as three miles away from its real location.

This holds especially true in flooded natural areas.

The fortunate part of this situation is that, any given stolen laptop would almost always connect to the internet via a WiFi network the first time around.

If the user clicks the lock button that it should bring up a number of different options.

The default settings dictate that Bitdefender Total Security remotely locks the user’s official and active user account and then moves ahead to deactivate all other accounts.

Users have the option of choosing to have Bitdefender Total Security snap a couple of webcam photographs as the device is in the process of locking up.

This feature is present so that users have a chance, no matter how small, of getting a mugshot of the person who stole his/her laptop.

Now, if the user does not have a password protecting his/her laptop’s Windows account then, first, that’s ill-advised.

And second, the user still has the chance of locking the device down with the help of nothing but a small four-digit passcode.

In cases, where the user simply forgets his/her password the Bitdefender Total Security security suite allows users to find the passcode again via the Bitdefender Central area.

Testing for this feature is somewhat complicated on a laptop that does not come with an account password.

Of course, users can always make use of the online console in order to get the passcode and hence restore access to the machine.

Well, believe it or not, but that is pretty much it for Bitdefender Total Security’s anti-theft feature.

However, if we’re being fair, Bitdefender offers everything that a user would need for a work laptop.

We have already mentioned the fact that the option of selecting a loud sound alarm is no available on the laptop platform.

It is available on Android though.

And that makes sense.

An average online consumer is more likely to lose his/her Android smartphone device even around his/her own house or office than he/she is to lose his/her laptop.

Selection_014

Users also have the option of locating a stolen or lost laptop.

Moreover, Bitdefender Total Security can help the user to lock the laptop in order to prevent any kind of misuse.

For situations where the user feels the laptop is hopelessly lost and/or unrecoverable, then he/she has the option of sending a neat little remote command which would wipe the whole device.

This would effectively keep the user’s data out of malicious hands.

What about macOS?

Bitdefender Total Security does have protection for the macOS platform.

Even the Bitdefender entry-level security suite comes with a parental control system which supports the Mac platform.

However, it does so in a slightly weird fashion.

Why do we say that?

Let’s find out.

Firstly, the Bitdefender Total Security suite installs a free trial version of the original Bitdefender antivirus for macOS.

After that, once the user’s device begins to show up in the official Bitdefender Central area, the users has the option of connecting the device with the Bitdefender parental control system.

Now, here, readers must understand that even after the Bitdefender antivirus for macOS trial period runs out, the Bitdefender parental control system would still remain pretty much active.

As pointed out at the top as well, the Bitdefender Total Security suite is a cross-platform product.

With this product, users get to make use of the full installation of macOS version of Bitdefender Antivirus.

Not only that, users also get to make use of the free version of Bitdefender VPN.

Our research shows that various independent antivirus labs that carry out performance tests absolutely review of bitdefender this product.

And our research shows the same.

It is the best.

Especially when it comes to providing protection against phishing attacks.

Bitdefender Antivirus can protect users and their files along with their backups from ransomware attacks as well.

The company even has a Traffic Light web browser add-on/extension which warns the user of various dangerous website links that may appear in search results.

This is pretty similar to how this component works when used on the Windows operating system.

Bitdefender Total Security really is the complete security for macOS

The only thing we’ll say in this section is that the Bitdefender Antivirus protection for Mac has ranked pretty well in various best Antivirus lists for Macs.

It ranks pretty high for us as well.

The only other antivirus for Mac that we think gives Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac a challenge is Kaspersky Internet Security for the Mac platform.

Bitdefender Total Security for the Android platforms

Our research shows that the easiest way for anyone to install the official Bitdefender security app on a device running Android is to go to Bitdefender Central and then send an email to the device.

When the email arrives, the owner of the Android device should click the link which is contained with the email address.

The link would automatically download the official app from the official Google Play Store website.

And when the user is ready to run the app, his/her Bitdefender Central login credentials which are available for use at any time, would come baked right into the whole installation and usage process.

In the beginning, users should expect the Bitdefender Security app to lead them through some critical settings and the related actions.

Essentially, the user has to give the official app Device Administrator status.

That is the only way for the app to actually enable and then implement anti-theft features.

With the Device Administrator status enabled, the app can make use of some other slightly more mundane device permissions as well such as the ability to access the user’s files, media, photos, and calls.

The official Bitdefender Total Security app also recommends to first time users to run a complete system malware scam.

Apart from that, it also invites users to enable the suite’s App Lock.

We’ll talk more about the App Lock a bit later in another section.

For now, it is sufficient for the user to know that if he/she enables the feature then Bitdefender gains the ability to snap an image of the person who is trying hard to guess the user’s  PIN code for the lock screen.

As mentioned before when talking about the Windows platform protection, Bitdefender Total Security offers users an online console using which they can wipe, lock and locate their Internet-enabled device running on Android.

However, unlike the Windows version, Bitdefender provides users with an option to generate a loud noise alert.

That can come in real handy if the user has managed to misplace his/her phone.

Bitdefender also offers users an option to fully invoke one or more of these features with the help of coded text messages.

However, it goes without saying that if the user is making use of his/her Android device as a tablet or a podcast and hence does not have a sim in it, then this feature will not work.

Selection_015

For the purposes of more security, Bitdefender Total Security only accepts those coded text messages that came from a smartphone device that the user had taken the trouble of previously marking or identifying as a trusted device.

Our research shows that the Bitdefender Account Privacy feature has the ability to find breaches that may have happened one or even two years ago such as exploit.in and/or breachComplication respectively.

We have also come to know that the official Android app gives good advice to the user to change the official account password.

After the user has done that, the app takes away the warning messages.

Needless to say, no one will have the opportunity to access the user’s smartphone device if the user has locked that device with the help of a PIN code and/or even a fingerprint feature which is better from a security perspective.

With that said, it is also true that if someone is able to pick that phone up while it is unlocked and also when the owner of the phone is not looking, then that someone could and probably would dig real deep into the owner’s personal data and private emails among many other things.

This is where the App Lock feature comes into play.

It puts an extra amount of security on apps such as Settings, Messages and/or email.

In fact, this feature can cover any app that the user wants it to cover.

All that the user has to do is to tap in order to select the protected applications.

To configure when and how the apps should lock, the user has a couple of options available.

The default settings dictate that Bitdefender Total Security would require the user to input the unlocking fingerprint or PIN each and every time the user wants to use the locked app.

However, users have the option of changing that to keep the unlocked apps in a state of being unlocked until the device’s screen goes off (such a setting would actually defeat the purpose of the app lock).

There are other more useful options as well.

Users can permit a short/brief exit/return and return/exit action to not require a second unlock.

Apart from that, the user can also set the feature to work in a way that all the apps on the device remain in an unlocked state when the user has connected to a WiFi network that he/she trusts.

Perhaps this is a good time to mention that Bitdefender Total Security also manages to apply its robust and powerful web protection feature to keep the user safe from fraudulent and malicious sites pretty much as well as it does on the Windows operating system.

Bitdefender takes it upon itself to protect Google Chrome automatically.

Not only that, it also has the ability to optionally provide protection to other apps such as Opera, Firefox and even Dolphin.

Our research shows that while Bitdefender doesn’t offer the same security extravaganza that it offers to users on the Windows platform, the Bitdefender Total Security on the Android platform is nothing but a comprehensive and robust suite of various useful security components.

The Android protection suite includes web protection, anti-theft, antivirus and a locking feature for the user’s sensitive applications.

Moreover, it even has a feature for account privacy reporting.

What about protection on the iOS platform?

The good news here is that Bitdefender offers a mobile security suite for the iOS platform which is completely free

However, that mobile security suite is not really a part of the Bitdefender Total Security technically speaking.

If the user successfully installs the iOS protection on his/her iPad or iPhone, the installation does not use up of the user’s Bitdefender licenses.

We think that is pretty understandable

Why?

Because the company’s iOS security product doesn’t do much in the first place.

Selection_016

Pretty similar to how the application works on the Android platform, the official Bitdefender iOS app also has a connection to a free VPN service built right into the app.

All users are eligible to use the VPN service for a total of 200 MB each day.

That means, users can have a secured internet connection for 200 MB worth of transferred data

However, Bitdefender does not allow the user to choose a server.

The user has to show a bit of contentment and work with the server that the official app has selected for the user.

Things change a bit for users who pay for the app.

Users who have dolled out some cash for the premium VPN service, they can select the country of their choice for their Vpn server and also use the Bitdefender VPN service for as long as and as much as they want.

There are no bandwidth limits either.

The Bitdefender iOS app offers users the same reasonably modern Account Privacy feature which users can find on the Android platform.

Additionally, it also offers a similar looking set of anti-theft abilities.

Unfortunately, here too the user cannot configure the app to sound a loud alarm the same way they can on the Android platform.

However, users still get the option of logging to the Bitdefender Central online console and then locate, wipe or lock their Internet-enabled device.

Our research out in the world also shows that Bitdefender actually reported the location of the device to the Bitdefender Central online console upon completion of the installation process.

It did not do so after the fact.

Some users may face problems when they take their device to another location and try to locate the device via the online Bitdefender Central.

Our research shows that Bitdefender and sometimes through an error message which informs the user that the company is working hard to locate the user’s device.

In the same message, the company also states that it will notify the user when the user’s device location is found and available.

However, review of bitdefender reality, users should not expect Bitdefender Central to send any kind of notification to them.

Moreover, changing one’s own physical location is not going to help either as Bitdefender Central would still show the user the same error message.

Pretty similar to this, the Lock command on the iOS platform did not have any effect either.

Readers should take note here that it is quite hard for anyone to check if this feature works or not

The thing is, the iPad already has a feature where it locks after one minute automatically.

So the user has to disable that feature in order to truly know if this feature works or not.

The same is the case with any other iOS device that has an active default lock setting.

It is because of such incompatibilities that we think that remote Bitdefender Total Security lock command is somewhat valuable to users only in the less-than-a-minute time frame before the device’s own auto-lock finally kicks in.

Needless to say, the mobile security suite that Bitdefender offers for the iOS platform has some serious limitations

Moreover, our research also shows that it doesn’t perform as well as it should in the real world.

However, readers should also take into account the fact that the iOS mobile security suite is not really a feature of the paid Bitdefender Total Security.

It comes for free.

And it does not consume one of the user’s Bitdefender licenses.

The free app is able to manage the iOS devices for the user.

So if the user does not have any need to managing or protecting his/her iOS devices, he/she isn’t losing out on anything but not making use of the Bitdefender iOS mobile security suite.

More on Bitdefender Central

We have already mentioned at the start of the review that Bitdefender Central is the location that users need to be at if they want to extend their Bitdefender protection to new Internet-enabled devices.

As indicated earlier as well, readers should think of Bitdefender Central as the primary place they have to go to if they want to locate their lost device.

Selection_017

This is also the place where they can activate various anti-theft security features.

However, Bitdefender Central has more to offer to users who dare review of bitdefender look a bit deeper.

The only problem is that, it is hard to ascertain which feature is available on which platform.

Some features are platform-specific and this is something that Bitdefender is going to have to fix if it wants to climb up the rankings of the best security suite for the money a bit further and open up a bigger gap between it and its competitors.

Let’s go over to how users are supposed to make the best use of the Bitdefender Central component.

Firstly, the user should choose a Windows internet-enabled device that is shown in the console.

Once the user does that, Bitdefender Central should show the user a total review of bitdefender five tabs.

These five tabs come in the form of,

  • Vulnerability
  • Dashboard
  • Anti-theft
  • Optimizer
  • Protection

We have already said much about the Anti-theft security features.

Moving on to the Dashboard feature, it is the default tab which has the responsibility of displaying statistics on the threats which Bitdefender may have blocked in any given week.

Not only that, this tab also shows the user some more details like the internet-enabled device’s MAC address.

In addition to that, there are the vendor details as well the as information on device type.

Coming to the Protection tab, users have the option of viewing various different results from the last performed full or quick scan for viruses and malware.

The users also have the option of launching any given scan via remote means.

No one needs any explanation as to why and where the remote scanning feature would come in handy.

But in any case, it should provide a lot of benefit to those users who have to manage internet-enabled devices for a family member that isn’t necessarily a techie.

In a similar way, there is the Optimizer tab which has the responsibility of showing the user the exact results of the last optimizer scan and startup optimizer scan.

Users can take advantage of this feature and remotely optimize his/her Windows system.

There is also a facility there for remotely managing various startup items.

Bitdefender Central also furnishes users with a Vulnerability page.

This is the place from where users can confidently launch a new vulnerability scan.

From this place the user can also view all the existing results from the relevant scan

Whenever the user selects an internet-enabled Android device, the online console offers users the same information on the Dashboard in addition to the Anti-Theft and Protection tabs.

However, it offers just a single scan.

It makes no difference between the full and quick scan.

Selection_021

Bitdefender Total Security subscribers can launch a new scan or view all the latest results remotely as well.

As for the device that is running on the macOS platform, it only gets access to the Protection and Dashboard tabs.

There are options available to macOS users to run either a full or a quick scan.

But what about the Anti-Theft feature for Macs?

Sorry.

That is a feature for Windows and Android people.

Things change a little bit for the iOS devices in the sense that iOS users have access to the Anti-Theft and Dashboard features.

But the Dashboard feature is pretty useless on an iOS device since it always reports to the user that it has blocked no threats in the past week.

Annoying.

But understandable.

It is understandable because Bitdefender on the iOS platform has no anti-malware component.

This is in stark contrast to the security suite that Webroot SecureAnywhere offers to users.

Webroot has a similar looking dashboard but it provides users with the ability to remotely review all the relevant scan results.

Moreover, users can also review recent virus/malware detections.

Selection_018

In addition to that, Webroot also furnishes the user with a complete set of useful remote commands.

Users can easily launch a system optimization scan, cleanup scan or malware scan via remote methods.

If that wasn’t enough already then Webroot also allows users to lock, shut down and/or restart their protected device remotely.

With that said, Webroot and its ilk do not offer users the anti-theft component on desktop machines.

They are mobile-only, in other words.

And while mentioning Webroot perhaps we should also talk about Kaspersky.

Kaspersky offers users the My Kaspersky dashboard which the company associated with the official Kaspersky Security Cloud.

The service enables users to manage their devices as well as their licenses and also configure parental control features along with other conveniences like the ability to log into Kaspersky password manager data.

However, even Kaspersky is not perfect.

It’s My Kaspersky dashboard does not allow users to have any remote scan options.

This is an area where Bitdefender has the clear lead on Kaspersky.

Users have review of bitdefender option of setting up a, kind of, trust relationship which allows McAfee installations not only check but also change each other’s current configurations.

However, that is also restricted to devices which are connected to the same network.

In other words, Bitdefender really has an outstanding program in providing users with the ability to control and monitor security remotely on their devices.

Bitdefender Total Security conclusion

After everything is said and done, the fact is Bitdefender Antivirus Plus can show everybody all the awards it has managed to win from independent labs.

Not only that, our research shows that there is not a web-based malware test that Bitdefender cannot ace.

The Bitdefender Total Security includes a ton of features and among them are,

  • A decent virtual private network
  • A password manager
  • Banking protection
  • Ransomware protection which is multi-layered.

Not only that, Bitdefender Internet Security goes a pretty good job of expanding the default Windows protection with the help of,

  • A parental control system which is fully functional and cross-platform.
  • A complete file encryption system
  • A decent spam filter
  • A firewall

Readers should have no doubt about the fact that Bitdefender Total Security is truly top of the line best-in-class security suite from Bitdefender.

Users who are on the Windows platform takes things even further by adding an anti-theft and system tune-up feature.

The Bitdefender Total Security suite further extends the impressive features it offers to users to the Android and Mac OS devices.

Bitdefender even has the confidence to offer up the free and official Bitdefender protection to iOS users without any strings attached.

Though we have explained all the problems that come with that.

Bitdefender Total Security has a humongous collection of useful and working security features.

Our research shows that almost each one of them is top notch.

That is the reason Bitdefender Total Security suite is not only our number one mega-suite but also the internet’s (probably?).

With that said, we will add that users who want to aim for full and complete protection for an unlimited number of their internet-enabled devices and that too on any given platform, they should probably consider the very good Norton Security Premium from Symantec.

As far as cross-platform and multi-device online security is concerned, Norton is pretty much equal to Bitdefender Total Security.

Overall though, Bitdefender Total Security is the king.

For now.

Unlimited data costs an additional $7 a month or $40 a year, or you can get Bitdefender's Premium Security antivirus suite.

The completion time increased to 12.4 seconds after Total Security was loaded but before any active scanning took place, indicating a a rather heavy 19% decline in performance.

You can add another "action" of your choosing or replace an existing one.

Image 1 of 3
Image 2 of 3
Image 3 of 3

  • Remote monitoring and control options available

Cons

  • The iOS platform has limited support

However, users who want to use Bitdefender Total Security on a broader basis can raise their limit of simultaneous devices to a total of 10 by raising the base price to just $99.99 per year.

Perhaps this is a good time to mention that users who have this need of managing a ton of internet-enabled devices, the best option for them is to sign up for McAfee Total Protection which costs users around $99.99 each year and protects an unlimited number of devices on the iOS, Android, mac OS, and Windows platform.

Moreover, the official Bitdefender installer also takes liberties to add the company’s VPN to the overall installation process.

However, it also warns the user that he/she does not have the permission to delete such files.

Our research shows that various independent antivirus labs that carry out performance tests absolutely adore this product.

However, in reality, users should not expect Bitdefender Central to send any kind of notification to them.

However, Bitdefender Central has more to offer to users who dare to look a bit deeper.

Once the user does that, Bitdefender Central should show the user a total of five tabs.

Users have the option of setting up a, kind of, trust relationship which allows McAfee installations not only check but also change each other’s current configurations.

For now.

Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition Review

Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition offers effective and unobtrusive real-time protection, but is deliberately light on other features.

Pros

  • Works on Windows 7 & 8.1
  • Extremely simple to use

Cons

  • Less effective than some rivals
  • No ransomware defence or scheduled scans

Key Features

  • One account can manage up to 25 systems:Bitdefender allows one account to be used with up to 25 systems, making remote device management significantly easier.
  • Protection shield:The protection shield includes malicious site filtering, as well as phishing and fraud protection for the web.

Introduction

The free version of Bitdefender’s malware defence toolkit, like most free antivirus, shares its detection engine with the company’s paid-for editions.

It provides an otherwise bare-bones experience that nonetheless benefits from being hassle-free and easy to live with. But is that enough for it to beat off the competition as the best free antivirus?

Malware detection performance

The Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition engine typically performs well in tests. It achieved a 100% detection rating in AV-Test’s real-world and reference scanning tests, with only a single false positive and a 99.9% rating with three false positives in AV Comparatives’ most recent real-world protection test. The software was not included in SE Labs’ recent tests.

Features

Unlike many of its free antivirus rivals, you have to create a Bitdefender account and register Antivirus Free to activate the software.

Up to 25 systems running Bitdefender free can be associated with a single account, which gives you some helpful remote device management features, such as the ability to check the protection status of each system and see any threats that might have been detected on them.

Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition

Once installed, the Bitdefender client’s interface is refreshingly free of clutter. There’s just a single, compact status screen displaying your protection status. Here, you can activate a full system scan or drag and drop in any file or folder to immediately check it for threats. However, you can’t schedule scans to be carried out regularly, which may be a deal-breaker for some more traditional users.

An inconspicuous promotional bar at the bottom encourages you to upgrade to a paid-for edition. A switch in your account info settings allows you to disable notifications of special officers on the paid-for version of the product. Although it doesn’t have explicit interruption-free profiles for gaming or movies, Bitdefender Antivirus Free doesn’t bombard you with pop-ups and notifications.

In its settings screens, you can view a list of events, check quarantine files, enable and disable Bitdefender’s real-time Protection Shield, and add file websites to an exclusion list if they’ve been blocked as a potential threat.

Although you don’t get all the features of Bitdefender’s full product, the protection shield includes malicious site filtering, phishing and fraud protection for the web. However, it lacks useful features of the paid-for product, such as ransomware protection that blocks unapproved programs from changing selected directories, antispam for your mail client, mic and webcam protection, stolen device location tools, parental controls, and rescue environment.

Best Offers

Should you buy it?

You want simple, hassle-free protection:
Simple, accurate, real-time and on-demand scanning with no extraneous features and very few interruptions, Bitdefender Free is a great choice for older Windows systems.

You care about features:
This is one of the most feature-light antivirus solutions around, so if you want more than real-time protection, you should look elsewhere.

Final Thoughts

The Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition malware detection is almost (but not quite) up to Microsoft Defender’s outstanding performance. However, it’s a great choice if you’re still using Windows 7 or 8.1 and want a truly simple interface to work. For more features and scheduled scans in particular, try Avast Antivirus Free.

BitDefender Antivirus 2008 review: BitDefender Antivirus 2008

BitDefender Antivirus 2008 is perhaps the most improved of the antivirus applications we've seen so far this year. It is fast and light, and like , our current Editor's Choice winner, BitDefender Antivirus 2008 offers hourly updates. However, we'd like more access to configuration options beyond simple enabling and disabling features. Still, for the price, and for the excellent quality of its antivirus protection, BitDefender Antivirus 2008 ranks among our few top contenders for 2008. For a look inside see our BitDefender Antivirus 2008 slideshow.

We experienced no problems during several installations during the end of August 2007. Installation requires a reboot.

Should you want to uninstall BitDefender Antivirus 2008, the All Programs menu includes an uninstall option. After reboot we could find no traces of BitDefender Antivirus 2008 left on our test system.

Interface
BitDefender Antivirus 2008 opts for a no-nonsense interface. Should there be any security issues, one of the large icons will display red. For remediation there's a large Fix This button, or you can click the specific graphic to see what's wrong. We experienced only minor issues with this approach.

BitDefender Antivirus 2008 offers a no-nonsense interface.

Upon installation, our Identity Privacy icon displayed red. Clicking either the Fix This Issue button or the Identity Privacy icon took us to a rule creation page. Now what? To get the Identity Privacy icon to go green, we either had to create a rule or turn off the feature, yet we were not given enough information to make that choice. Keeping Identity Privacy enabled assumes that you are comfortable providing personal details such as passwords and credit card information. Rather than fill out real information, we created a faux Social Security number of 123-45-6789 to satisfy BitDefender's request without disabling the feature. For the moment, the icon is green, but we're on the fence whether to keep the Identity Privacy feature enabled or disable it completely.

Features
BitDefender Antivirus 2008 covers a lot of ground, protecting your system from viruses, spyware, privacy breaches, phishing attacks, and rootkits. And BitDefender is the only antivirus product we've seen that advertises a Gamer mode, minimizing protection alerts and resources while you're off playing games.

For out-of-the-box protection, for the most part, we agree with BitDefender's default settings. For instance, with antivirus scans, the default setting scans files during boot, recently accessed files, packed files (although not archived files), incoming and outgoing e-mails--so far so good. The only difference with the more aggressive setting available is the addition of scanning activity on port 80 and port 443. BitDefender's HTTP scan blocks malicious ActiveX and JavaScript, and is part of the antivirus and antispyware protection. Do you need that? Again, there is not enough guidance within the program to help users make that decision; most browsers offer add-ons that will also screen for these scripts.

As for the default privacy protection, BitDefender will look for instances of private information leaving the computer and guard against spyware attempting to install on the machine. The more aggressive setting adds cookie control and script protection, which most browsers will also allow you to control. Do you need this protection if your browser already provides similar protection? Again, BitDefender doesn't offer enough guidance within the program to help users make that decision. Most browsers offer free add-ons that will screen for these scripts as well.

Performance
BitDefender Antivirus 2008 scored well in both our CNET Labs' performance tests and in one third-party, independent antivirus test using live viruses. On our iTunes test, BitDefender Antivirus 2008 was tied for first, completing in a fast 270 seconds, just 2 seconds above our test system. On our Microsoft Office test, BitDefender Antivirus 2008 came in near the middle at 1,426 seconds. For scanning a single folder with files, BitDefender Antivirus 2008 came in second requiring 163 seconds. And in boot speed, BitDefender Antivirus 2008 came in first, with a respectable 28 seconds. To find out how we test, see CNET Labs' How we test: software: antivirus page.

In terms of protecting your PC, we cite results from two leading independent antivirus testing organizations. In the latest test results from AV-Comparatives.org, for on-demand scans, the previous version, BitDefender Professional 10+, earned an Advanced (second-highest) rating, catching 96 percent of all malware tested; and for the Retrospective/Proactive test, BitDefender Professional 10+ also earned a Standard (middle) rating, detecting almost half the backdoors, Trojans, and other malware sampled. BitDefender was not tested by CheckVir.com, our second choice for test results.

Support
BitDefender provides a fairly complete package of technical support for its antivirus product. Greatly improved from last year is the built-in help file, although it would be nice if it were also context sensitive so that when we have a question about the Identity Pirvacy feature, the help file opens on that section immediately. BitDefender also offers an online Getting Started document, but we found its intended audience to be the Internet security suite users, not those starting out with just the antivirus product. BitDefender also delivers an adequate online FAQ, and there are several active user forums. Finally, you can e-mail or call a toll-free number, 888-868-1873, for live technical support.

Conclusion
While we like many features of BitDefender Antivirus 2008 and recognize that it has greatly improved since last year, we were disappointed by the overall feeling we get when using the application. In particular, the configuration settings could be more nuanced beyond just enable and disable. And the settings that are available could be better explained. Often we were left changing settings without being given enough context to make the right decisions.

  1. В @thewiirocksВ  they would just show it off in that case, and say that release will be later this year. They clearly aware of people expectations and they will not ruin them unintentionally. They know we are disappointed right now
